In the movie The Last Wagon, Richard Widmark stars as Comanche Todd, a former army scout who witnesses the massacre of a wagon train that he was leading through Indian territory. The only survivors are a widow named Mrs. Lowe (Felicia Farr) and her two children, Jenny (Susan Kohner) and Billy. Comanche Todd decides to take them to safety in the town of Lordsburg, but they are pursued by a group of Comanche warriors led by Toehay (Tommy Rall).

As they journey through the Indian territory, Comanche Todd and Mrs. Lowe develop a mutual respect and attraction for each other. However, Toehay and his warriors are never far behind, attacking the wagon repeatedly and killing members of their party. Comanche Todd must use all of his skills as a scout to keep the survivors alive and evade their pursuers.

Along the way, they encounter other travelers, including a preacher named Dr. A. Meyer (Nick Adams) and a gambler named Fenderson (Victor Mature). Both men have their own reasons for joining the wagon train, but they soon become valuable allies in the fight against the Comanches.
