The Last Shot is a comedy film from 2004 directed and written by Jeff Nathanson. The movie features a star-studded cast including Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, Toni Collette, and Calista Flockhart. The movie follows a struggling young writer, Steven Schats (Matthew Broderick), who is desperate to break into the film industry. When he is commissioned by a shady FBI agent, Joe Devine (Alec Baldwin), to write a script for a fake movie, Steven is given what he sees as the opportunity of a lifetime. Devine has set up the movie as a front to capture members of the mob, who he believes will be interested in investing in a Hollywood film.
Steven soon finds himself in over his head as he tries to produce and direct the fake movie without arousing the suspicions of the FBI, the mob, or his own cast and crew. Meanwhile, Devine is tracking the mob's interest in the fake project and uncovering corruption in the film industry.
As production on the fake movie ramps up, tensions rise between Steven and the film's star, Emily French (Toni Collette), who is a bit of a diva. Through a series of hilarious mishaps, Steven's relationship with Emily eventually causes him to realize what he is really looking for in life and helps him to grow as a person.
The Last Shot is a sharp, witty comedy that skewers Hollywood and the film industry while still managing to be heartwarming and touching. The movie is full of memorable characters, including a lovable but dimwitted crew member (played by Tim Blake Nelson) and a ruthless mob boss named Tommy Sanz (played with relish by Tony Shalhoub).
The movie is packed with nods and references to the history of Hollywood, including parodies of famous movies and actors, making it a treat for fans of film history. It also features a great soundtrack, featuring classic tracks from the likes of The Beach Boys and The Zombies.
Despite its biting satire, The Last Shot is ultimately a tale of an underdog fighting to follow their dreams, and is sure to leave audiences feeling uplifted and inspired.
