In The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu, Jeff and Charlie are two slacker friends who discover that they are descendants of the famed horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. They soon learn that Lovecraft was not just a writer of fiction, but that the monsters he wrote about in his stories are actually real and lurking just beyond the edges of our world.
The two friends are approached by a secret society of Lovecraftian scholars who inform them that they are the last living heirs to a powerful artifact which could unleash the wrath of the ancient god Cthulhu and cause the destruction of the world as we know it. With the fate of the world in their hands, Jeff and Charlie must travel to the Pacific Northwest to locate the artifact before it falls into the wrong hands.
As they journey closer to their destination, they encounter a variety of bizarre and terrifying creatures who are also searching for the artifact. With the help of a beautiful but mysterious woman named Starla, Jeff and Charlie must race against time to stop the artifact from being used for evil purposes and prevent the end of the world.
The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu is a horror-comedy film that blends elements of Lovecraftian horror with tongue-in-cheek humor. The film's mix of slapstick and scares is reminiscent of similar horror-comedies like Shaun of the Dead and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil.
The cast of the film is led by Kyle Davis (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), who plays the role of Jeff. His bumbling and awkward demeanor make him the perfect foil for Devin McGinn's Charlie, who is more of a slacker than an adventurer. Together, the two actors make a great comedic duo and their banter is one of the highlights of the movie.
Matt Bauer plays the role of the evil Dr. Smythe, who is searching for the artifact in order to use it for his own sinister purposes. Bauer's performance as the film's villain is suitably menacing and he delivers some of the film's more chilling lines with relish.
The film's special effects are impressive given the film's limited budget. The creature designs are imaginative and the monsters are suitably grotesque and frightening. The film's use of practical effects, rather than relying solely on CGI, gives the film a more tactile and believable quality.
While the film's humor is certainly its strong suit, it does not skimp on the scares. The Lovecraftian monsters are genuinely creepy and there are plenty of jump scares and moments of tension throughout the film.
Overall, The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu is a fun and entertaining horror-comedy that will appeal to fans of Lovecraftian horror and horror-comedies alike. The film's mix of humor and horror is well balanced and the performances by the cast are excellent. While the film may not be for everyone, those who are looking for a horror film with a sense of humor will find much to enjoy in The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu.
