In the year 2025, the world has drastically changed as a result of increasing concerns over energy use and environmental pollution. Society has become highly regulated, with strict regulations imposed on energy consumption and transportation. The government maintains strict control over people's lives, and personal freedom has become a thing of the past. This is the setting for The Last Chase.
The movie follows the story of Franklyn Hart (played by Lee Majors), a retired race car driver and ex NASA test pilot who is now a taxi driver in Boston. In this future world, cars are not allowed to exceed a speed limit of 55 miles per hour. He currently spends his time driving his taxi around the city, reminiscing about the days when he was able to speed around race tracks.
One day, Hart is hired by Claire (played by Annie McEnroe), a scientist at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to help her escape from Boston. Claire has discovered that the government is planning to exterminate people who are over the age of 65 to reduce energy consumption. She wants to get to California, where a group of like-minded people have established a free community.
Hart agrees to help Claire, but they soon discover that the government has become aware of their plan and is not going to allow them to escape. The government sends out a special automated police car, programmed to track and apprehend them. The car is directed by a powerful AI (artificial intelligence) system known as AUTO who is determined to bring Hart and Claire to justice.
As Hart and Claire try to outrun AUTO, they are joined by a group of rebels who have taken possession of an old fighter plane called the F-86. The rebels' goal is to use the plane to help Hart and Claire evade AUTO and safely reach California.
The Last Chase is a thrilling action movie with a unique and thought-provoking storyline. It explores the concept of a future world where personal freedoms have been severely curtailed in the name of environmental protection. The movie challenges the audience to think about the impact that government regulations and restrictions can have on individual lives and freedoms.
Lee Majors, best known for his roles in The Six Million Dollar Man and The Fall Guy, delivers a strong performance as the retired race car driver who is forced to use his driving skills to save himself and Claire. Burgess Meredith, famous for his role as the Penguin in the 1960s Batman TV series, stars as the leader of the rebels who help Hart and Claire. Chris Makepeace, known for his roles in Meatballs and My Bodyguard, plays one of the rebels who assists Hart and Claire.
The Last Chase was Directed by Martyn Burke, who is also known for his work on critically acclaimed films such as "Pirates of Silicon Valley" and "The Pentagon Wars". The movie features impressive special effects for the time, including a fully automated police car and a thrilling airplane chase sequence.
Overall, The Last Chase is a highly engaging movie that blends action, science fiction, and social commentary into a film that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. By questioning the relationship between government control and individual freedom, the movie remains relevant today and serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a balance between protecting the environment and preserving individual liberties.
