The Kid is a 1950 Western movie directed by Lewis D. Collins that tells the story of a young orphan boy who becomes friends with a troubled gunslinger. The film stars Don 'Red' Barry, Robert Lowery, and Wally Vernon in the lead roles. The movie is set in a small frontier town where the orphan boy, Billy (played by Rusty Lane), lives with the local blacksmith, Jim (played by Nolan Leary). Nicknamed the Kid, Billy is a precocious child who dreams of becoming a cowboy and owning a horse of his own. One day, he witnesses a gunfight between two men and is left with a bullet wound in his arm. He is taken in by Jim and his daughter Jo (played by Anne Nagel) to nurse his injury.
Meanwhile, the town sheriff, Luke Williams (played by Robert Lowery), is at his wit's end trying to catch the notorious outlaw, Wally Higgins (played by Don 'Red' Barry), who has been causing havoc in the area. When Wally gets injured during a shoot-out with the sheriff's men, he takes refuge at the blacksmith's shop, and Billy befriends him.
As the Kid spends more time with Wally, he learns that behind the tough exterior lies a tormented soul who is haunted by the demons of his past. Wally, in turn, sees in the Kid the innocence and purity he lost long ago. The two form an unlikely bond, and Wally starts to open up to the Kid, sharing his dreams and fears.
However, Wally's hideout is discovered by the sheriff, and a shootout ensues. In the chaos, Wally manages to escape, but the Kid is captured by Luke, who thinks he is Wally's accomplice. Wally comes back to rescue the Kid, but in the end, he is fatally wounded. Before dying, Wally passes on his gun and horse to the Kid, asking him to follow his dreams and live life to the fullest.
The Kid is a heartwarming tale of friendship and redemption set against the backdrop of the Wild West. Don 'Red' Barry delivers a standout performance as the troubled outlaw who finds solace in the company of a young boy. Robert Lowery is also excellent as the hardened sheriff torn between his duty and his conscience, while Wally Vernon provides comic relief as the bumbling deputy.
The movie's pacing is slow at times, but the chemistry between the lead actors and the beautiful cinematography make up for it. The ending is bittersweet yet uplifting, leaving the audience with a sense of hope and nostalgia.
Overall, The Kid is a classic Western that deserves to be remembered for its heartfelt storytelling and memorable performances.
