In The Kid Who Would Be King, Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) is a twelve-year-old boy who discovers a magical sword in a construction site near his school. He soon learns that the sword has been waiting for him and that he is the only one who can use it to defeat the evil enchantress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson), who wants to take over the world.

Alex is an ordinary boy, but he has the heart of a hero. With the help of his best friend Bedders (Dean Chaumoo), he sets out to fulfill his destiny and stop Morgana from destroying the world. The two of them soon encounter a group of bullies led by Lance (Tom Taylor) and Kaye (Rhianna Dorris), who join them on their journey.

As they make their way towards Morgana's lair, Alex, Bedders, Lance and Kaye are pursued by Morgana's minions, fiery creatures called the 'Mortes Milles' who have been unleashed to stop them. However, Alex discovers that he has more power than he thought and that he can turn his enemies into stone by saying the word 'stonehenge'.

Along the way, Alex receives help from the wizard Merlin - who has been reincarnated as a teenager (Angus Imrie) - and his older self (Patrick Stewart). Merlin teaches Alex how to harness the power of the sword and how to be a true leader.
