During World War II, British Major William Vandam (played by Cliff Robertson) is tasked with stopping a German spy who goes by the name of Alex Wolff. This spy is sending information from Cairo to Rommel's tank division, making it nearly impossible for the Allies to gain a strategic advantage in the war. The danger is amplified by the mysterious code Wolff uses to contact the German army: a detailed description of a necklace worn by a certain beautiful woman. The necklace is used as a key to a codebook for transmitting the messages, and the British must find both the woman and the book before the Germans can strike.
Things spiral out of control when, as luck (or perhaps misfortune) would have it, Major Vandam's ex-lover, Elene Fontana (played by Season Hubley) - the woman whose necklace is the key to the code - shows up in Cairo. Vandam begins to suspect that Elene may be working with Wolff, but also finds himself falling for her once again.
As time runs out, Vandam becomes more desperate to find Wolff and break the code, leading to a series of dangerous encounters and high-stakes gambits. Complicating matters is a British colleague named Archer (played by David Soul), who is secretly working against Vandam and harbors his own agenda.
