The January Man is a 1989 comedy-thriller directed by Pat O'Connor and starring Kevin Kline, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Susan Sarandon. The movie follows an ex-cop named Nick Starkey (Kline) who is forced out of retirement to solve a string of murders that have stumped the police department in New York City. The story begins with Nick, a former hero detective turned burnout, being hired by the mayor to solve the case of a serial killer who has been murdering women in January. He is given a team of detectives to work with, including his brother Frank (Harvey Keitel), who is now the police commissioner.

As Nick tries to solve the case, he becomes entangled in a love triangle with his brother's girlfriend (Sarandon) and his childhood sweetheart (Mastrantonio), who is the only person who can identify the killer. The investigation takes Nick through the seedy underbelly of the city, including a strip club, a fancy restaurant called The January Man, and the home of a wealthy art collector.

The January Man is a darkly funny movie that keeps the audience guessing until the very end. The humor comes from the witty banter between Nick and his team of detectives, particularly his former partner Ed (Danny Aiello), who is now a sergeant. There are also plenty of hilarious situations, such as when Nick crashes a fancy dinner party and ends up with his pants down in front of the guests.

The movie also has a suspenseful edge, particularly during the scenes where Nick is chasing the killer through the streets and alleys of New York City. The killer is always one step ahead of Nick, and there are several close calls where it seems like Nick might not make it out alive.

One of the best things about The January Man is the cast. Kline is perfectly cast as the gruff, sarcastic Nick, and Mastrantonio and Sarandon both shine in their respective roles. Keitel is also great as Nick's straight-laced brother, and Aiello steals several scenes with his hilarious one-liners.

Overall, The January Man is an entertaining movie that is equal parts comedy and thriller. It's a fun ride from start to finish, with plenty of laughs and suspense along the way. If you're a fan of 80s movies or crime thrillers, it's definitely worth checking out.

The January Man is a 1989 crime movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 37 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.5 and a MetaScore of 33.
