Gladys Aylward is a woman from England who has always dreamed of living in China and helping the people there. She works for some time to earn the money she needs to accomplish this goal, and she finally is able to go there and work in an inn, where she quickly develops a close bond with the children in the village. Life is blissful for a while, but then the war comes, and China is under threat from Japan. At once, Gladys realizes that she must help these Chinese children get over the mountains in order to escape the Japanese.
