In The Hunter, Steve McQueen stars as Ralph 'Papa' Thorson, a modern-day bounty hunter. He's a hard-nosed, no-nonsense man who gets the job done, and he does so with a variety of tricks he's learned over the years. By the time the movie starts, he's already been in the business for over 20 years, and he's seen it all. Thorson is hired to track down a number of different bail jumpers, most of whom are violent criminals. Along the way, he works closely with a variety of local law enforcement officers, who help him track down his targets. One of the officers he works with the most is a woman named Bernice, played by Kathryn Harrold, who becomes something of a love interest for Thorson as the movie progresses.

One of the main bail jumpers Thorson is after is played by Eli Wallach, who does an excellent job in the role of a man who's done some terrible things but still manages to be sympathetically human. Wallach's character, Tommy Price, was responsible for the death of Thorson's friend and fellow bounty hunter, and Thorson is more determined than ever to bring him to justice.

Another character who plays an important role in the movie is a man named Albert R. Lefcourt, played by Richard Venture. Lefcourt is a bail bondsman who hires Thorson to track down the jumpers, and he becomes something of a mentor to Thorson. He teaches him the ins and outs of the business, and they have a great dynamic throughout the film.

The Hunter is a very well-made movie, with a lot of great action scenes and some very intense moments. It's not a perfect movie – some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy, and there are a few scenes that don't quite fit together perfectly – but overall, it's an extremely entertaining film that will keep you engaged from start to finish.

One of the things that makes The Hunter so effective is its pacing. The movie moves along at a brisk pace, and it never feels slow or boring. There's always something happening, and the action scenes are expertly handled. There's a great car chase in the movie that's particularly thrilling, and there are some tense moments as Thorson tries to track down his targets.

Another thing that works very well in The Hunter is the relationship between Thorson and Bernice. Harrold does a great job in the role of a tough, no-nonsense cop who's not afraid to stand up to Thorson, and she and McQueen have some great chemistry together. Their relationship is never overdone, but it feels believable and natural, and it helps to give the movie a bit of heart.

Of course, a lot of the credit for The Hunter's success goes to Steve McQueen. He's perfect in the role of Thorson, and he brings a dignity and a toughness to the character that really sells the whole thing. McQueen was at the end of his career when he made this movie – he would die just a year later – but he gives it his all, and his performance is one of the reasons the movie is still worth watching today.

Overall, The Hunter is a great example of a classic action movie. It's got a great cast, some thrilling action scenes, and a lot of heart. If you're a fan of Steve McQueen, or if you just love a good action movie, you won't want to miss this one.

The Hunter is a 1980 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 37 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.2 and a MetaScore of 31.
