In the movie, The Horrible Dr. Hichcock, we are introduced to a physician named Dr. Bernard Hichcock, who is living with his wife Margaretha in a castle in Italy during the 19th century. Dr. Hichcock is known throughout the town as a very peculiar man who is quite withdrawn from the rest of the community. He spends most of his time in his laboratories conducting experiments that are unknown to the people around him.

However, soon enough, the townspeople begin to notice strange occurrences happening around them. The first being the numerous corpses that are being found all over town with the mark of two small holes upon their necks. The second is the strange behavior of some of the townspeople who seem to have grown out of control with their emotions.

In the midst of all this chaos, Dr. Hichcock's wife Margaretha, seems to be suffering from bouts of madness and hysterical fits, which is causing her husband to grow increasingly worried. Dr. Hichcock finds himself torn between the love for his wife and his growing fascination with the science and magic that's taking over the town.

As the plot unfolds, we see Dr. Hichcock becoming more and more involved with the otherworldly occurrences happening around him, experimenting in ways that are both grotesque and fascinating. As the town becomes even more chaotic and the citizens begin to riot, Dr. Hichcock is forced to confront his own inner demons and decide what it is that he truly desires.

The Horrible Dr. Hichcock is a classic example of a horror movie. It is a slow-burn, slow-building film that sets the stage gradually before unleashing its true horror upon the audience. While the story of Dr. Hichcock himself is compelling, it is the atmosphere of the movie that truly sets it apart.

The gothic backdrop of the Italian countryside combined with the eerie music sets the tone for the movie perfectly. The dark, gloomy scenery is just as important to the movie as the dialogue and plot. The cinematography is excellent and the lighting is especially effective in heightening the atmosphere of the movie.

The performances of the cast are also noteworthy, with Barbara Steele delivering a strong performance as the mentally unstable Margaretha Hichcock. Robert Flemyng also gives a great performance as Dr. Hichcock, expertly shifting between his scientific curiosity and his love for his wife as the movie progresses.

Silvano Tranquilli, who plays the role of Inspector D'Archinci, also delivers an excellent performance as the detective trying to solve the mysterious deaths and strange occurrences happening throughout the town.

The Horrible Dr. Hichcock is a must-see for anyone who loves classic horror movies, as it sets the bar high for horror movies of its time. It is a reminder of how great horror movies can be when they are thoughtfully crafted, with the perfect combination of atmosphere, setting, and acting. Even though it is nearly six decades old at this point, it still holds up today as a fantastic example of horror cinema.
