The Girl Is in Trouble is a 2015 crime thriller directed by Julius Onah. The film is set in New York City and follows August (Columbus Short), a bartender who finds himself in trouble after a one-night stand with a woman named Signe (Alicja Bachleda). When Signe goes missing the next day, August sets out to find her and discovers a web of intrigue involving a drug kingpin, a rapper, and a corrupt detective.
The opening sequence of the film sets the tone for the rest of the movie, as August discovers a dead body in a dumpster outside his bar. The body belongs to a drug dealer, and August realizes that he may be in danger due to his connection to the victim. August's best friend and coworker, Nicholas (Wilmer Valderrama), advises him to stay out of trouble, but August can't help himself when Signe walks into his bar.
Signe is a mysterious woman with a troubled past, and August is immediately attracted to her. They spend the night together, but August wakes up the next morning to find Signe gone. When he tries to track her down, he discovers that she is a missing person and that the police are looking for her.
August's search for Signe leads him to a rapper named Angel (Jesse Spencer), who Signe had been dating. August also crosses paths with a drug kingpin named Perico (Pablo Schreiber) and a corrupt detective named Shep (Tom Pelphrey). As August gets closer to the truth about Signe's disappearance, he finds himself in the middle of a dangerous game of cat and mouse.
One of the strengths of The Girl Is in Trouble is its visual style. The film has a gritty, neon-lit aesthetic that captures the dark underbelly of New York City. The cinematography is impressive, especially during the film's action sequences. Director Julius Onah also makes effective use of split-screen and other visual techniques to keep the story moving at a brisk pace.
The film's cast is another highlight. Columbus Short delivers a solid performance as August, a man who is in over his head but refuses to give up. His chemistry with Wilmer Valderrama's Nicholas is believable, and the two actors play well off each other. Alicja Bachleda is also impressive as Signe, a woman who is trying to escape her past. Her interactions with August are the emotional heart of the film.
The supporting cast is equally strong. Jesse Spencer is suitably menacing as Angel, the ruthless rapper who is involved in the drug trade. Pablo Schreiber is a standout as Perico, the drug kingpin who has a personal vendetta against August. Tom Pelphrey rounds out the cast as Shep, the crooked cop who will stop at nothing to protect his own interests.
The Girl Is in Trouble also has a great soundtrack, featuring a mix of hip-hop and electronic music that fits the film's aesthetic perfectly. The music adds to the film's energy and helps to build tension during the action scenes.
Overall, The Girl Is in Trouble is an entertaining crime thriller with a strong cast and stylish visuals. While the story may be somewhat familiar, the film's execution is top-notch. Fans of gritty crime dramas will find plenty to enjoy here.
