A washed up TV news stringer, Eric Hayes' life is filled with sex, death and violence. He chain smokes, his girlfriend leaves him, and his latest film, a brutal murder of a young woman, is rejected by a TV Executive who he hoped would purchase it. Hayes goes on a drinking binge after his meeting with his girlfriend dissolves into an argument. Drunk, Hayes drives aimlessly around Los Angeles until he witnesses what appears to be a rape in progress. Upon closer inspection, Hayes discovers something far more terrible than any of his films: The Ghouls, subterranean humanoids that prey on the flesh of the living. Hayes begins filming the attack, watching in horror as the young woman is torn apart.
He returns to the TV Executive, believing he struck gold, before realizing he had no tape during the attack. Determined to find the ghouls, he visits his friend Clift and revisits the crime scene where he finds only traces of blood. Hayes speaks to an old man who provides them with information about the ghouls. As they wait, the ghouls come out, and the two head back into the alley looking for them. Hayes and his friend split up in the hope that one of them will capture the creatures on film. However, Clift is attacked by the ghouls. Hayes arrives to find the creatures devouring his friend and films it before running for help.
Hayes fights an old acquaintance but gets the upper hand and uses the unconscious attacker to bait the ghouls so he can film them again. Under attack, his car is totaled, and he retreats to his ex-girlfriend's place where they have another heated argument. Hayes finds his way to a bus stop where he meets an individual who steals his camera but knocks himself unconscious trying to retrieve it and awakes in the creatures' lair where he has one last skirmish with the ghouls.
The Ghouls is a 2003 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 21 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 3.8.
