In 1949 Los Angeles, a notoriously violent and ruthless gangster named Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) has taken over the city's criminal underworld. The police force, corrupt and in Cohen's pocket, is unable to bring him to justice. In desperation, the city's police chief (Nick Nolte) assembles an elite task force – the Gangster Squad – to take down Cohen and his organization by any means necessary.

The squad is led by John O'Mara (Josh Brolin), a tough and experienced cop who is also a WWII veteran. He handpicks a team of men who are willing to do whatever it takes to stop Cohen and his men. Among them is Officer Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), a charming and smooth-talking womanizer who is drawn to Cohen's girlfriend, Grace Faraday (Emma Stone).

As the Gangster Squad carries out their dangerous and often illegal mission, they become embroiled in a deadly game of cat and mouse with Cohen and his henchmen. The violence escalates, and the stakes become higher as O'Mara and his team put everything on the line – their careers, their families and their lives – to take down Cohen once and for all.

Gangster Squad is a stylish and action-packed crime drama that showcases an all-star cast at the top of their game. Sean Penn is terrifyingly convincing as the sadistic and cold-blooded Mickey Cohen, while Josh Brolin brings a stoic intensity to his portrayal of O'Mara. Ryan Gosling is effortlessly cool as Wooters, and Emma Stone is stunning as the femme fatale Grace Faraday. The chemistry between Gosling and Stone sizzles, adding a romantic subplot that gives the film an added layer of complexity.

The film is visually stunning, with a rich and immersive production design that transports the audience back to the neon-lit streets of 1940s Los Angeles. The action sequences are expertly choreographed and executed, with gunfire, explosions and car chases that are sure to get the adrenaline pumping. Director Ruben Fleischer succeeds in creating a compelling and entertaining film that pays homage to classic Hollywood crime dramas while also injecting his own modern sensibility.

However, the film is not without its flaws. Some have criticized its historical accuracy, noting that it takes many liberties with the true story of the Gangster Squad and its battle against Cohen. Others have criticized its treatment of female characters, arguing that they are reduced to the role of love interests and have little agency of their own. Despite these criticisms, Gangster Squad remains a thrilling and entertaining film that is sure to satisfy fans of the crime genre.

Gangster Squad is a 2013 crime movie. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.7 and a MetaScore of 40.
