In the 1976 sci-fi horror movie, The Food of the Gods, nature takes its revenge on humankind when a mysterious substance found on a remote island causes animals and insects to grow to enormous sizes. Directed by Bert I. Gordon and based on a novel by H.G. Wells, the film stars Marjoe Gortner, Pamela Franklin, and Ralph Meeker. The plot follows two couples who stumble upon a farm where they discover the mysterious food that has been causing animals to grow to huge proportions. The group tries to warn the people in the nearby town, but nobody listens until it's too late. Chaos ensues as giant rats, wasps, chickens, and even a baby deer wreak havoc on the town and its inhabitants.
The movie opens with a young couple, Morgan and Lorna, traveling to a remote island where they plan to spend their honeymoon. While exploring the island, they come across a farm owned by Mrs. Skinner, an eccentric old lady who has been feeding her livestock with a mysterious substance that causes them to grow to enormous sizes.
Morgan and Lorna are amazed by the size of the animals and decide to take some of the substance back with them to conduct experiments in the hopes of finding a way to eliminate world hunger. They enlist the help of a scientist named Dr. Kate Travis, who is skeptical but intrigued by the substance.
Meanwhile, another couple, Brian and Rita, arrive on the island looking for adventure. They end up at the farm and also see the giant animals, but they are more interested in drinking and partying. When they accidentally tamper with the substance, they are attacked by one of the giant rats.
As the group tries to leave the island, they are sabotaged by Mrs. Skinner, who doesn't want the secret of her giant animals to be revealed. Morgan and Lorna are stuck on the island while Dr. Kate, Brian, and Rita make it back to the mainland.
Once on the mainland, the group tries to warn the townspeople about the danger, but nobody believes them. Eventually, the giant animals make their way to town and cause widespread chaos and destruction. The group must band together to find a way to stop the creatures before it's too late.
The Food of the Gods is a classic '70s B-movie that perfectly captures the era's fascination with all things monstrous and out of control. The special effects, while dated by modern standards, are still impressive and add to the movie's overall campy charm.
Marjoe Gortner delivers a solid performance as the lead character, Morgan, and Pamela Franklin is equally impressive as the level-headed and skeptical Dr. Kate. However, it's the giant animals that steal the show, from the terrifying giant rats to the absurdity of a giant chicken attacking a car.
Overall, The Food of the Gods is a fun and entertaining movie that is perfect for fans of '70s horror and sci-fi. It's a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, but still manages to deliver thrills and chills.
The Food of the Gods is a 1976 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 28 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.6.
