The Extra Day is a romantic drama movie from 1956. It is directed by William Fairchild and stars Richard Basehart, Simone Simon, and George Baker. The movie tells the story of a struggling artist named John Hilliard (Richard Basehart) who has been living in Paris for the past five years. He hasn't been able to sell any of his paintings and is struggling to make ends meet.

One day, while walking along the Seine River, John meets a mysterious woman named Nelly (Simone Simon). She is wearing a red velvet dress and looks like she has just stepped out of a painting. John is immediately drawn to her and they strike up a conversation. Nelly tells John that she is a time traveler from the 18th century and has come to see Paris in the present time.

As the two spend more time together, John begins to fall in love with Nelly. She is charming and witty, and he can't believe that such a woman would be interested in him. However, their time together is limited, as Nelly has to return to her own time period at the stroke of midnight.

John is torn between his love for Nelly and his desire to lead a normal life. He consults his friend David (George Baker), who is a writer and a skeptic, and tells him about Nelly. David doesn't believe in time travel and thinks that John is losing his mind. However, he advises him to enjoy his time with Nelly and not worry too much about the future.

As the day progresses, John and Nelly explore the city and visit some of the famous landmarks. They attend a concert, go to a café, and even take a boat ride on the Seine. John is happy for the first time in a long while and knows that he will never forget this day.

As the hour of midnight approaches, John and Nelly rush to the Eiffel Tower to say their goodbyes. Nelly tells John that he has given her the best day of her life and that she will always cherish it. She then disappears into thin air, leaving John alone and confused.

The next day, John wakes up to find that the events of the previous day have been erased from history. Nobody remembers seeing him with Nelly, and there is no evidence that she ever existed. John is devastated and tries to find an explanation for what happened. He visits the spot where he met Nelly and sees a painting of her, done by a famous artist from the 18th century. He realizes that Nelly was real, and that he had become a part of her story.

The Extra Day is a beautiful movie about love, loss, and the power of imagination. It captures the romantic spirit of Paris and the magic of fleeting moments that can change a person's life. The performances of Richard Basehart and Simone Simon are excellent and bring depth and warmth to their characters. The movie is also visually stunning, with gorgeous cinematography and a memorable score. It's a timeless classic that will leave you thinking about it long after it's over.
