In The Devil's Rock, two Allied soldiers, Captain Ben Grogan (Craig Hall) and Sergeant Joe Tane (Matthew Sunderland), are sent on a mission to the Channel Islands during World War II. Their mission is to sabotage German defenses in order to pave the way for the D-Day invasion. However, their mission takes a horrific turn when they discover the Nazis have been conducting occult experiments on the island.
While sabotaging a German gun emplacement, Captain Grogan hears strange noises coming from an old bunker nearby. Investigating, he discovers a beautiful but terrified woman, Helena (Gina Verela), locked in a cell. She begs him to release her, claiming that a demonic creature is loose on the island and has already killed all of the German soldiers except for her.
Skeptical at first, Grogan and Tane soon realize that something is very wrong on the island. An ancient evil has been unleashed, and it's coming for them.
The Devil's Rock is a tense and atmospheric horror film that doesn't rely on jump scares. Instead, it slowly builds a sense of dread and unease as the true nature of the demonic presence on the island is revealed.
The acting in the film is top-notch, particularly Craig Hall's portrayal of the conflicted and haunted Captain Grogan. He channels both bravery and vulnerability as he tries to make sense of the nightmare he's stumbled into. Matthew Sunderland is equally strong as the hard-nosed Sergeant Tane, who initially dismisses the supernatural claims but is eventually forced to confront them head-on.
Gina Varela's Helena provides the emotional heart of the film as a victim of the Nazis' cruel experiments, and her scenes with Grogan are particularly affecting.
The Devil's Rock is also notable for its impressive visual effects, particularly in the creature design. The demonic creature is both terrifying and oddly beautiful, with grotesque features that seem almost sculptural.
Director Paul Campion also does an impressive job of creating an oppressive and claustrophobic atmosphere within the confined space of the bunker. The film's sound design is also particularly effective, heightening the tension as the creature draws closer.
While The Devil's Rock is a horror film at heart, it's also a meditation on the horrors of war and the ways in which the lines between good and evil can become blurred. As Grogan and Tane struggle not only against the demonic presence but also against their own sense of culpability in the war, the film asks uncomfortable questions about the nature of violence and its impact on the human psyche.
Overall, The Devil's Rock is a smart and stylish horror film that deserves more attention than it's received. With a strong cast, excellent production values, and a genuinely chilling story, it's sure to satisfy horror fans looking for something a little bit different.
