In 18th century New England, tensions run high between the American colonies and the British army. In the midst of this conflict, a man named Dick Dudgeon (played by Burt Lancaster) is known as the town's "Devil's Disciple" for his rebellious and unscrupulous ways. Despite his reputation, Dick is a man of principle who believes in individual freedom and the rights of the people.

One day, the British army arrives in town to search for rebel leaders, and Dick is falsely accused of being one of them. As he is about to be executed, the real rebel leader, Reverend Anthony Anderson (played by Kirk Douglas), shows up and takes responsibility for the rebellion. However, he is captured and sentenced to death as well.

Laurence Olivier plays the British General Burgoyne, who is in charge of the search for the rebels. Although he is initially portrayed as a cold and heartless enemy, he begins to show a more sympathetic side as he interacts with Dick and Reverend Anderson.

As the story progresses, Dick becomes the unlikely hero of the film, using his wit and humor to outsmart the British soldiers and help the rebels. Along the way, he also forms a bond with General Burgoyne, as the two men begin to see each other's point of view.

The Devil's Disciple is a classic tale of rebellion and redemption, full of wit, drama, and action. The film boasts an all-star cast, including three of the greatest actors of their generation. Burt Lancaster is charismatic and charming as Dick Dudgeon, while Kirk Douglas brings his trademark intensity and passion to the role of Reverend Anderson. Laurence Olivier, known for his Shakespearean roles, adds a touch of class and sophistication to the film.

The Devil's Disciple is not just a war movie or a historical drama, but a timeless tale of courage and conviction that still resonates today. It explores themes of freedom, justice, and individuality, as well as the complex dynamics between enemies and allies. The film offers a nuanced and entertaining look at a pivotal moment in American history, and reminds us that even the most unlikely heroes can rise to the occasion when called upon.

The Devil's Disciple is a 1987 war movie. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.0.
