In the dark comedy-drama film The Details, Tobey Maguire stars as Jeff Lang, a married man living a seemingly perfect life with his wife Nealy (Elizabeth Banks) and their young son in the beautiful suburbs of Seattle. However, Jeff is a deeply flawed individual with a number of secrets and personal demons that soon come to light, threatening to destroy his idyllic existence.
When a family of raccoons move into Jeff's backyard and start tearing up his lawn, he becomes increasingly obsessed with getting rid of them, much to the annoyance of his neighbor Lila (Laura Linney), who is dealing with her own marital issues. As Jeff becomes more and more fixated on the raccoons, his already fragile relationships with his wife, friends, and colleagues start to crumble.
As the film unfolds, we see Jeff grappling with issues of infidelity, drug addiction, and a general sense of malaise with his life. Meanwhile, Nealy begins to suspect her husband of cheating on her, leading her to make some questionable decisions of her own.
What follows is a series of blackly comic and increasingly absurd situations as Jeff's life spirals out of control. Along the way, there are some memorable supporting turns from the likes of Dennis Haysbert, Kerry Washington, and Ray Liotta.
At its core, The Details is a film about the dark underbelly of suburban life, and how seemingly small things can have a huge impact on our relationships and personal well-being. Maguire delivers a strong performance as the troubled Jeff, and the film's off-kilter humor helps to keep things from getting too bleak, even as the character's situation becomes more and more dire.
Director Jacob Aaron Estes does an excellent job of balancing the film's various tonal elements, seamlessly moving from comedy to drama to suspense as the story demands. The film's pacing is brisk and engaging throughout, with a number of unexpected twists and turns that keep the audience guessing.
Overall, The Details is a well-crafted and entertaining film that offers a unique perspective on the trials and tribulations of modern suburban life. With its strong performances and sharp writing, the film is definitely worth a watch for fans of dark comedy and character-driven dramas.
