Led by the notorious gunman and charismatic leader, Frank Harte (Sam Elliott), the group consists of the sharpshooter Leland, the former preacher Bitterroot, and the wild card, Ezra. The group's luck takes a turn for the worse when their attempted holdup of a stagecoach goes awry, leading to a violent showdown with the law.
After narrowly escaping the law, the group stumbles upon a small town, and they begin to plan their next move to escape the long arm of the law. To their surprise, they find the town filled with dark secrets and corruption, and they must decide if they will stand aside or take action. Meanwhile, Harte finds himself drawn to the town's beautiful and enigmatic owner, Anita (Linda Fiorentino), who has her own troubled past.
As tensions rise between the outlaws and the town's corrupt forces, the group must face their own past sins and decide whether the risk and bloodshed of another robbery are worth it. With dangerous enemies on all sides, including the relentless Marshal Sharp (Craig Sheffer), the outlaws' only hope is to stay together and fight for their survival. But as each member is tested to their limits, it becomes clear that not everyone will make it out alive.
