In the early 1900s, the Denver and Rio Grande railroad company is in fierce competition with its rival company, the Denver and Gulf, to extend its railway line to Pueblo, Colorado. The Denver and Rio Grande is led by General William J. Palmer (played by Dean Jagger), a man devoted to excellence and progress. His rival, Jim Vesser (played by Sterling Hayden), is the leader of the Denver and Gulf and is willing to do whatever it takes to win the railroad war.

The movie focuses mainly on Jim Vesser, a charismatic but ruthless man who has made it his life's mission to beat the Denver and Rio Grande. He is ruthless in his tactics and is not above sabotaging his opponents' equipment and killing those who stand in his way. At the beginning of the movie, Jim Vesser successfully manages to capture a prized locomotive from the Denver and Rio Grande company, causing a setback for General Palmer.

Edmond O'Brien plays the role of Johnny Buff, an ambitious and tough engineer who is determined to design a faster and more efficient locomotive engine. He joins forces with General Palmer and together they come up with a design for a new steam engine that could propel the company towards victory in the railway war.

The plot thickens when Jim's beautiful wife, Barbara (played by Kasey Rogers), falls in love with Johnny Buff. This creates a love triangle that adds to the tension between the two railroad companies.

The movie is an epic adventure that takes the viewer through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in America, from the majestic Rocky Mountains to the sweeping prairies. The cinematography is stunning, with wide-angle shots of the trains barreling down the tracks against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

The Denver and Rio Grande is a classic Western that combines the thrilling action of a train heist with a compelling tale of rivalry and ambition. The performances are outstanding, with Sterling Hayden delivering a standout performance as the charismatic but morally questionable Jim Vesser. Dean Jagger's portrayal of General Palmer is also noteworthy, as the actor brings a sense of authenticity and gravitas to the role.

The movie's soundtrack, composed by David Buttolph, is a sublime fusion of traditional Western music and sweeping orchestral arrangements that captures the grandeur and majesty of the American West.

The Denver and Rio Grande is a movie that stands the test of time and is a testament to the golden age of American Westerns. It's a timeless classic that combines stunning visuals, thrilling action, and compelling characters to provide an unforgettable cinematic experience.
