In the movie The Deep Blue Sea, which was released in 2011, Rachel Weisz portrays a woman named Hester Collyer. The movie takes place in post-World War II England, where Hester is in the midst of an affair with a former RAF pilot named Freddie Page, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston. At the beginning of the movie, Hester attempts to take her own life through gas poisoning. After being discovered by her neighbours, she is taken to the hospital and revived. Flashbacks are interspersed throughout the movie, slowly giving insight into the events leading up to Hester's suicide attempt.

Hester is married to a man named Sir William Collyer, who she married merely to escape the boredom of her life as the daughter of a clergyman. After meeting Freddie, Hester falls deeply in love with him and embarks on a passionate affair. However, Freddie's emotional distance and inability to fully reciprocate Hester's love is a source of great frustration for Hester. The passionate yet tumultuous nature of their relationship is a central theme throughout the movie.

Over time, Hester's affair becomes known to Sir William, who is initially hurt but ultimately comes to realise that he still loves his wife. However, Hester's feelings towards Freddie are unrequited, and she becomes increasingly unstable as a result. Her suicide attempt is a culmination of her deep unhappiness and inability to move on from Freddie.

Aside from Hester, the other characters in the movie are also struggling to deal with their own issues. Sir William is plagued by his love for Hester and his inability to help her. Freddie is dealing with his own demons from the war, unable to fully connect emotionally with anyone due to his own trauma.

The film is beautifully shot, with a muted colour palette and many scenes of Hester standing alone in empty rooms, emphasising her sense of isolation. Rachel Weisz delivers a captivating performance as Hester, conveying both her vulnerability and her strength. Tom Hiddleston is equally compelling as Freddie Page, able to convey both the passion and the emotional distance of his character.

The Deep Blue Sea is a poignant exploration of love, desire, and emotional turmoil. It is a character-driven film that delves deep into the inner lives of its protagonists, examining the complex emotions and motivations that drive human behaviour. Despite its somewhat bleak subject matter, the film is ultimately a moving portrait of the enduring power of love.

The Deep Blue Sea is a 2011 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 38 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.2 and a MetaScore of 82.
