The Deal is a 2005 movie that stars Christian Slater, Selma Blair and Robert Loggia. The movie is a comedy-thriller about a struggling movie producer Bobby Mason (Christian Slater) who is desperate to produce a big hit so that he can save his studio from bankruptcy. He finds a script about a 19th-century British prime minister who is secretly a spy, which he believes could be his ticket to success.
Mason's seemingly straightforward plan to make the film is complicated by the fact that the script is owned by a veteran Hollywood producer, Marty (Robert Loggia), who has no intention of letting Mason make the movie, let alone benefit from it. After a series of twists and turns, Mason and Marty come up with a deal that would allow Mason to produce the film, but at a cost that he might not be willing to pay.
The Deal features some excellent performances from the three leads, particularly Christian Slater who brings his trademark wit and charm to his role as the struggling producer. Selma Blair is equally good as the actress who Mason hires to play the spy prime minister's wife, and she manages to hold her own against Slater's suave performance.
Robert Loggia's character, Marty, is a grizzled old producer who has seen it all, and it shows. Loggia's performance is intense and commanding, and he makes Marty the perfect antagonist for Mason's character. The chemistry between Slater and Loggia is excellent, and it is easy to see why they were cast in their respective roles.
The movie's supporting cast is also strong, and there are some notable cameos, including John Heard as a ruthless studio executive, and Angie Harmon as a savvy movie star who knows how to play the game.
One of the most interesting aspects of The Deal is how it portrays the cutthroat world of Hollywood. Mason is a relatively green producer, and he learns quickly that in Hollywood, success often comes at a steep price. The movie doesn't shy away from depicting the sometimes brutal reality of making a film, and it is easy to see how someone like Mason could get in over his head.
Overall, The Deal is a fun, fast-paced movie that manages to entertain without taking itself too seriously. The movie is well-written, with plenty of witty dialogue and clever twists, and the performances from the cast are excellent. While not a box office smash, The Deal is a hidden gem that is definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of comedy-thrillers or Hollywood movies in general.
