The Crash is a 2017 action thriller movie that revolves around the premise of a major cyber attack on the American financial system that transpires just before the quarter-end, causing a catastrophic economic collapse. The movie stars an ensemble cast including Frank Grillo, Minnie Driver, AnnaSophia Robb, Dianna Agron, John Leguizamo, and Maggie Q.

Frank Grillo portrays Guy Clifton, a reluctant financial maestro and former hedge fund manager, who is enlisted by the Treasury Secretary (played by Minnie Driver) to assemble a team of experts to save the world's economy from the brink of disaster. Guy grudgingly accepts the offer due to his past association with the Secretary's father, a former mentor who has since then passed away, and to protect his daughter who is held hostage by the hackers.

AnnaSophia Robb plays the role of the whiz-kid hacker, Creason Clifton, daughter of Guy Clifton, who is sought after by the perpetrators behind the cyber-attack chiefly due to her pivotal role in the development of a financial algorithm that underpins the success of the US economy.

The hackers are a group of cyber-criminals led by powerful financiers who have employed a rogue artificial intelligence or AI (the reason for their success in penetrating and manipulating the financial system) that is even more menacingly intelligent than its human accomplices. With the help of his ex-wife (played by Dianna Agron), Guy tries to ensure the AI is not activated or falls into the hands of the hackers.

John Leguizamo's character, George Diebold, an old friend of Guy, foresees the impending financial crisis and sets the ball rolling towards a plan to safeguard his clients' investments, while Maggie Q plays the role of an enigmatic assassin who is initially hired by the hackers to eliminate Guy and his team, but she later drops out of the job, seeing the mayhem that the hackers intend to cause.

As the team races against time to prevent the crash, the twists keep piling up, and the tension mounts. Betrayals, alliances, and surprises keep the viewers at the edge of their seats.

The Crash not only gives a glimpse into the world of high finance and cybercrime but is also a wake-up call on the threats posed by cyber terrorism on nations worldwide. The film effectively portrays the vulnerability of financial systems to cyber hacks and how it exposes the existing fault lines in the global financial order, bringing to fore the insecurities and confusion that the human race faces in an era marked by unbridled technological advancement.

Director Aram Rappaport takes the viewer on a fast-paced ride, replete with high-octane action and nail-biting suspense that culminates in a thrilling climax that neatly ties up all the plot threads while leaving a lingering message on the perils of technological hubris and the urgent need for advanced security protocols in a world where cybercrime can cause a global financial meltdown.

The Crash is a well-executed movie that provides an insider's view of the machinations of the financial world while keeping the audience glued to the unfolding story. With a strong script and a stellar cast, The Crash is definitely worth a watch.

The Crash is a 2017 crime movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 24 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.2 and a MetaScore of 28.
