The Company You Keep is a political thriller film released in 2012 directed by and starring Robert Redford. The movie tells the story of Jim Grant (Robert Redford), a former member of the radical anti-war group known as the Weather Underground, who has been living under an assumed identity for the past thirty years. The group was responsible for a series of bombings in the late 1960s and 1970s, and after a botched bank robbery in Michigan, many of its members went into hiding.
Grant's life is turned upside down when his old friend, Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon), who also belonged to the Weather Underground, turns herself in to the FBI after decades on the run. Her arrest brings Grant's true identity to the surface, and he finds himself at the center of a media frenzy. In addition to being a wanted fugitive, Grant also has to deal with the possibility of losing his rights to visit his daughter, Isabel (Jackie Evancho), whom he has raised alone since her mother's death.
As he tries to evade the authorities and clear his name, Grant sets out to find answers about what happened to his former comrades and track down Mimi Lurie (Julie Christie), the Weather Underground's leader, who has been in hiding for over 30 years. Along the way, he meets a young journalist named Ben Shepard (Shia LaBeouf), who is after the same story, but for different reasons.
Grant and Shepard's paths intertwine, and the two form an unlikely alliance as they try to uncover the truth about the Weather Underground and its members. The investigation leads them to a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where they meet a former Weather Underground member, Donal (Nick Nolte), who provides them with some valuable information.
Their search also brings them into contact with some of Grant's former associates, including Mimi's daughter, Rebecca (Brit Marling), a lawyer and single mother who is struggling with her own past and present. Grant and Rebecca's interactions are complicated by their shared history, making the stakes even higher as the FBI closes in on their location.
Throughout the film, the action is interspersed with flashbacks to the 60s and 70s, giving the audience a glimpse into the motivations of the Weather Underground and its members. The flashbacks provide context for the characters' actions and help to create a sense of urgency as the story unfolds.
The Company You Keep is a thought-provoking film that explores the themes of justice, redemption, and the legacy of the 60s counterculture movement. The ensemble cast is excellent, with standout performances from Redford, Christie, and LaBeouf. The script is well-written and keeps the audience engaged from beginning to end.
Overall, The Company You Keep is a must-see movie for fans of political thrillers and anyone who is interested in exploring the legacy of the 60s counterculture movement. It asks important questions about the nature of activism, the price of radicalism, and the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity.
