In 1970s Denmark, a couple named Anna and Erik decide to experiment with communal living in their large suburban home. They gather a diverse group of friends and acquaintances to live with them, sharing meals, resources and responsibilities. At first, the group seems to be thriving, with everyone enjoying the sense of community and the freedom to express themselves. They have lively discussions, play music together, and even throw wild parties. However, as time goes on, cracks begin to appear in their utopian vision.
Anna, who is pregnant with their second child, starts to feel neglected by Erik as he becomes more involved with other women in the commune. This causes tension between the two of them and disrupts the delicate balance of the group.
Meanwhile, some of the other members struggle with their new way of life. Ole, a reserved academic, finds it hard to connect with the others and becomes increasingly isolated. Another member, Mona, starts to have feelings for Erik, causing jealousy and resentment to bubble to the surface.
As the months go on, conflicts escalate and relationships fracture. The commune members must confront difficult truths about themselves and each other if they hope to salvage their experiment in communal living.
The film is a quiet exploration of human relationships, capturing the idealism and optimism of the era while also acknowledging the flaws and limitations of collective living. It features strong performances from the ensemble cast, particularly Trine Dyrholm as Anna, who imbues her character with a complex mix of vulnerability and strength.
Overall, The Commune is a thoughtful and nuanced portrayal of a social experiment that both succeeds and fails in equal measure. It's a poignant reminder that human connection is both precious and fragile, and that sometimes the most challenging relationships are the most rewarding.
The Commune is a 2017 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 52 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4 and a MetaScore of 60.
