The Chase from 1991 is an action-comedy film directed by Adam Rifkin, starring Casey Siemaszko, Ben Johnson, and Gerry Bamman. The movie is set in California and follows the adventures of Jack Hammond, portrayed by Charlie Sheen, an innocent man who is wrongfully accused of theft and murder, and ends up being chased by the police. Jack Hammond is a former racer who owns a car garage in Los Angeles. One day, he is hanging out with his friends, debating the economic crisis, and talking about how difficult it is for small business owners to survive in the current climate. Jack is approached by a woman who asks him for a ride in his car, which he accepts. Little does Jack know, the woman has just robbed a bank and framed him for the crime. Jack soon realizes that he has been set up and flees the scene in the stolen car.
The police are alerted, and Jack finds himself on the run, pursued by a group of cops led by Dalton Voss, a heavily armed and ruthless detective determined to bring Jack to justice. Jack decides to drive to his girlfriend, Natalie Voss, Dalton's daughter in hopes that she will help him escape.
As Jack speeds towards Mexico, he encounters a series of obstacles that make his escape more challenging. The police set up roadblocks, helicopters hover overhead and news crews film every move Jack makes, turning him into a media sensation.
En route to Mexico, Jack is joined by a cast of colorful characters who help him out, including a hitchhiking teenage girl named Natalie, played by Kristy Swanson, who is looking for fun and excitement, and an eccentric hostage, played by Ron Jeremy. Jack also has to deal with car trouble, a flat tire, and a broken fan.
The chase scenes in The Chase are adrenaline-filled, with plenty of high-speed car racing and crashes. The movie is packed with stunts and action, and there is never a dull moment. The dialogue is sharp, funny and captures the spirit of the early 90s, with its social commentary on America's obsession with reality television and celebrity culture.
One of the standout performances in the movie is by Ray Wise, who plays Dalton's boss, a corrupt and cynical police chief who perceives the media attention around the chase to be positive PR for his department. Charlie Sheen also delivers an impressive performance, portraying Jack as a likable, roguish character, who becomes more endearing as he encounters various obstacles on his journey.
All in all, The Chase is a fun and entertaining movie that combines aspects of comedy, action, and suspense. It's a thrilling ride that keeps you engaged from start to finish, with a mix of well-paced action and humorous scenes, and an impressive cast that delivers some memorable performances. The movie is a testament to Adam Rifkin's directorial skills and Charlie Sheen's inimitable on-screen persona. It's definitely worth a watch!
