The Bronze is a hilarious comedy film that was released in 2015. Starring Melissa Rauch as Hope Annabelle Greggory, Gary Cole as Stan and Haley Lu Richardson as Maggie, the movie follows the life of a former Olympic gymnast who is struggling to adjust to life after her athletic career ended. Hope was once a young gymnast representing the USA at the Olympics, but her career came to an end when she injured herself during a routine. Years later, Hope still basks in the glory of her medal and fame, and continues to live in her small hometown of Amherst, Ohio with her father, who runs a motel.
Despite being past her prime, Hope still clings to her celebrity status and has never been able to fully move on from her gymnastics career. She spends her days lounging around the motel, watching old videos of her performances and her interview appearances, and attending local gymnastics classes to coach the younger kids in her own technique.
Things take a U-turn when her former coach dies and leaves her a letter. The letter reveals that if she coaches a new gymnast named Maggie Townsend (Haley Lu Richardson) to victory at a regional gymnastics competition, she will receive a substantial amount of money. It's her chance to capitalise on her success from the past and to make sure she's not living off her father's meagre earnings any longer.
Initially, Hope is hesitant to take on the role of coach, but when she sees the potential in Maggie, she reluctantly agrees to help her out. Maggie, a budding young gymnast from Amherst, Ohio, shows immense promise under Hope's harsh and unconventional training techniques, but as they work together, they both realise they need this win to get out of their small-town lives.
Over time, Hope develops a bond with Maggie, who looks up to her as a mentor and coach. In turn, Maggie brings a sense of direction and purpose back into Hope's life, making her realise she has the potential to be something more than a washed-up Olympian.
Throughout the film, Hope's character transitions from rude and condescending to humorous and supportive. The relationship between Maggie and Hope is the film's emotional center, balancing out the humor. The Bronze is full of laugh-out-loud moments; whether it's Hope's snarky comments or her crude antics, the performances are fantastic.
Gary Cole as Stan does a great job playing Hope's father. The two have a playful yet strained relationship and the banter between them brings a sense of light-heartedness to the darker undertones of the story. The town of Amherst is also well fleshed out with various eccentrics making appearances throughout the movie.
The soundtrack of The Bronze is an interesting mix of classic rock and pop songs. It's not something you would expect in a movie about gymnastics, but it works well with the film's irreverent tone.
The Bronze is a movie that is both poignant and hilarious, with fantastic performances from its cast. Melissa Rauch does an excellent job portraying Hope's character, bringing a range of emotions to the screen. This is definitely one of Rauch's best performances till date. The director, Bryan Buckley, adds an element of cleverness to the film, making it into more than just a movie about gymnastics.
In conclusion, The Bronze is a must-watch for anyone who loves well-made comedies with heart. It's a movie about redemption, acceptance, and change, and it shows how anyone, no matter how stuck in their ways, can find a new lease on life.
