The Black Tavern is a 1972 thriller movie that is directed by Jin Xie. The movie stars Szu Shih, Li Tung, and Feng Ku. This film is set during the Ming dynasty period and tells the story of several travelers on their way to the capital city. They all decide to take a break and stop at the Black Tavern, which is infamous for its bandits and questionable guests.

As soon as they arrive, the travelers are greeted by a host of sinister-looking characters, including the Tavern's owner, who is played by Ku Feng. Feng, who is also the film's antagonist, has a reputation for robbing and killing his guests, and it becomes clear that the travelers are in grave danger. Nonetheless, they decide to stay, hoping that they will be able to protect themselves if they band together.

The travelers include a pair of swordsmen, a couple of traveling merchants, and a mysterious monk. Szu Shih, who plays the female lead, is also one of the travelers. She plays a sword-wielding adventurer who is traveling incognito, determined to find the person who killed her father. Shih is excellent in her role, and her fight scenes are particularly impressive.

Once the travelers settle in, they realize that they have walked straight into a trap. The bandits are closing in, the Tavern's guests are acting increasingly suspicious, and secrets are starting to come to light. Nonetheless, the travelers remain determined to escape without being robbed or killed. They start to hatch a plan and form alliances to aid their escape.

One of the most impressive aspects of The Black Tavern is its atmosphere. The Tavern is a shabby, dim, and menacing place, and the filmmakers do an excellent job of building unease and tension throughout the movie. There are a lot of great set-pieces and action scenes throughout the movie also. The fight scenes are especially well-choreographed, and the filmmakers do an excellent job of creating a sense of danger and suspense.

Throughout the movie, themes of suspicion, mistrust, and betrayal are explored. The characters are all hiding their true motives and identities, and the mistrust between them grows as the movie progresses. The monk, in particular, is a mysterious and intriguing character, and the film does an excellent job of keeping the audience guessing as to his true identity.

Overall, The Black Tavern is a compelling and well-made thriller. The characters are well-drawn, the atmosphere is tense, and the action scenes are thrilling. Fans of classic martial arts movies will find a lot to enjoy here, and the film is an excellent showcase for the talents of its cast and crew. If you're looking for an entertaining and suspenseful movie, then The Black Tavern is definitely worth checking out.
