The Bedroom Window is a suspenseful thriller from 1987 directed by Curtis Hanson, starring Steve Guttenberg, Elizabeth McGovern, and Isabelle Huppert. Based on the novel The Witnesses by Anne Holden, the movie tells the story of a young man who becomes involved in a dangerous game of deception and murder when he witnesses a crime from his bedroom window.
The movie opens with Terry Lambert (Steve Guttenberg), a young executive at an architectural firm, having an affair with the boss's wife, Sylvia (Isabelle Huppert). One night, at Sylvia's apartment, Terry witnesses a violent attack on a young woman, Denise (Elizabeth McGovern), from a nearby building. He rushes to the scene and tries to help Denise, but the attacker runs away before the police arrive.
Terry is questioned by the police, but he fears that his affair with Sylvia will be exposed if he tells them the truth about why he was there. Instead, he tells them that he saw the attacker's face, but only for a moment, and that he cannot identify him. The police are skeptical, but Terry is let go.
However, he soon realizes that his troubles are far from over. The real attacker, a serial killer who is targeting young women, knows that Terry saw him and starts to stalk him in order to silence him. Terry becomes increasingly paranoid, and when he is unable to convince the police of his innocence, he begins his own investigation into the killer's identity.
As Terry tries to solve the case, he becomes more deeply entangled with Denise, the victim of the attack he witnessed. Denise is involved with an abusive boyfriend, and Terry's efforts to help her put him in danger yet again. Meanwhile, the killer continues his rampage and sets his sights on Terry's girlfriend, Sylvia.
The movie is a tense and suspenseful thriller, with excellent performances from the entire cast, especially Isabelle Huppert, who delivers a chilling portrayal of a manipulative and dangerous woman. The movie also benefits from the expert direction of Curtis Hanson, who uses the shadowy alleys and empty streets of Baltimore to create a moody atmosphere that adds to the tension.
The movie also explores the themes of guilt and deception, as Terry struggles with his own conscience and ethics in the face of danger. The Bedroom Window is a gripping thriller that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats until the very end.
