Widow Mrs. Blunden (Dorothy Alison) lives in a London house with her three children Lucy (Lynne Frederick), Jamie (Garry Miller), and Baby Benjamin. After Lucy and Jamie meet a kind old man named Mr. Blunden (Laurence Naismith) in a park, they get to know him as more than just a friendly stranger.
Mr. Blunden, who is actually a ghost, enlists the help of Lucy and Jamie to solve a mystery that has been haunting him for years. He explains that in 1818, a wicked squire named Hawkings and his wife used to live in a big mansion called Langley Park. The couple had two orphaned children, Lucy and Jamie, who were mistreated by the squire and his wife. Upon the Blundens' arrival, Mr. Blunden's ghost takes Jamie and Lucy through a ghostly mirror in their home, transporting them back in time to 1818 where they help the squire's children escape the wrath of their parents. The two children in 1818 are also named Lucy and Jamie and are played by Rosalyn Landor and Marc Granger, respectively.
As the Blunden children help their counterparts, they also uncover a sinister plot involving the squire and his financially motivated attempts to kill his wife under the guise of keeping her safe from an alleged illness, so he could inherit coveted titles and property. The young Blunden children realize the murder plot making their way back to the present, they use evidence uncovered during their time in the past to bring the squire to justice.
