Private detective Jack Ramsey thinks he has an easy job trailing the wife of millionaire Richard Whitemore. Believing his wife to be having an affair, Whitemore pays Ramsey handsomely to find out the truth about her movements. Ramsey follows Whitemore's wife, Isabelle, and discovers she is indeed having an affair. After giving the information to Richard Whitemore, Ramsey is shocked when the lover is found murdered. Both Ramsey and the police decide Whitemore is the prime suspect; the businessman has other theories and asks Ramsey to investigate Vic Mulvey. After attempting to blackmail Whitemore, Mulvey is soon another suspect for Ramsey to negotiate with. As his investigation continues, Jack Ramsey finds himself drawn closer and closer to Isabelle, eventually embarking on an affair with his employers wife. After more and more of the Whitemore's associates and family are murdered the private detective begins to fear he may the next target for the killer.
