In 1984, movie fans were gifted with the DC comics superheroine, Supergirl. Starring Helen Slater, Faye Dunaway, and Peter O'Toole, Supergirl was a fun and exciting adventure that followed Superman's cousin as she came to Earth to retrieve the Omegahedron, an object that could save her home planet of Argo City. The movie begins with Kara Zor-El (Helen Slater) living a peaceful life in Argo City with her family, including her father Zor-El (Simon Ward) and her mother Alura (Mia Farrow). However, when an earthquake strikes and damages the city's power source, the Omegahedron, Kara is sent on a quest to retrieve the object and save her planet. She travels to Earth, accidentally causing a plane crash, and loses the Omegahedron to Selena (Faye Dunaway), a power-hungry witch who wants to use the object's power to dominate the world.

With the help of reporter Ethan (Hart Bochner) and her newfound superpowers, Supergirl sets out to retrieve the Omegahedron and save her planet from destruction. Along the way, she battles Selena and her minions, as well as meets new friends like the bumbling Jimmy Olsen (Marc McClure) and a sorcerer played by Peter O'Toole.

One of the standout performances in Supergirl is Faye Dunaway's portrayal of Selena. Dunaway played the character with a perfect balance of campiness and menace. Selena is a narcissistic witch who seeks power and admiration. She is helped by her dim-witted sidekick Bianca (Brenda Vaccaro), who provides a lot of the movie's comedic relief.

Another standout performance is Helen Slater as Kara/Supergirl. Slater embodies the character's innocence and bravery with grace and charm. Her Supergirl is a lovable hero with a strong moral compass who always tries to do the right thing, often to her detriment. Slater's performance is a true highlight of the film.

Peter O'Toole also brings his unique brand of gravitas to the role of Zaltar, a sorcerer who is Kara's mentor in Argo City. While he only appears in a few scenes, O'Toole's performance is a memorable one.

The movie's special effects were impressive for their time, and the scenes featuring Supergirl's flying are particularly noteworthy. The score by composer Jerry Goldsmith is also notable, with its lush orchestration and memorable theme.

Supergirl may not have been a box office hit, but it has become a cult classic over the years. It deserves credit for being one of the first female-led superhero movies, and for offering a fun and entertaining adventure full of magic and heroism. It is a reminder of a simpler time in superhero cinema, where movies didn't take themselves too seriously and heroes were inherently good.

Overall, Supergirl is a fun and engaging movie that offers a unique take on the Superman mythology. It is full of memorable performances, impressive special effects, and a catchy score. While it may not be a perfect movie, it is a delightful time capsule of 80s superhero cinema that is sure to entertain fans of the genre.
