Superdeep is a Russian horror movie released in 2020, directed by Arseny Syuhin. The movie tells the story of a group of researchers who venture deep underground to explore the Kola Superdeep Borehole, the world's deepest vertically dug hole. The team of researchers, which includes Anya, a young epidemiologist, and Nikolay, a seasoned geologist, descend into the borehole, hoping to find new discoveries and breakthroughs that could change the world.
The movie kicks off with a scene that sets the tone for what's to come. An infected miner from a nearby mine is brought to a medical facility, displaying bizarre symptoms that leave the doctors stumped. The plot thickens when Anya discovers that the origins of the illness come from deep beneath the earth's crust. The disease is caused by a highly contagious virus that has lain dormant for millions of years and has somehow been unleashed by the drilling process. The virus is highly lethal, spreading quickly and causing severe damage to its host's internal organs.
The expedition into the borehole soon becomes a race against time as the team battles to find a cure for the virus, trapped almost 12.3 km underground. However, as the group delves deeper, they begin to experience terrifying incidents that suggest that something ancient and dangerous is lurking in the depths. They soon realize that they are not alone in the gigantic borehole and that they are facing a more significant threat than just the virus.
The characters in the movie are fully fleshed out, with each bringing their unique ideas, specialties, and motivations. Milena Radulovic is the star of the movie, playing Anya, the lead character, who takes charge of the mission to find a cure for the virus. Anya is smart, resourceful, and a natural leader who doesn't hesitate to take action when things go wrong. Sergey Ivanyuk plays Nikolay, the geologist, who initially thought he knew everything about the borehole, but as things unfold, realizes that he understands very little about what's happening. Nikolay is the voice of reason, and his level-headedness and ability to remain calm in the midst of chaos provide an anchor for the team.
The movie boasts top-notch special effects that immerse the audience into the eerie and creepy world of the borehole. The special effects team does an excellent job of creating a haunting and terrifying atmosphere. Despite the movie's limited budget, the special effects and set designs are impressive, making the movie look visually stunning.
The pacing of the movie is perfect, with the tension ratcheting up as the team goes deeper into the borehole. There's a genuine sense of claustrophobia that builds as the team descends further and further underground, trapped without any means of communicating with the outside world. The team's isolation in the seemingly endless, eerie and unnatural environment, with the constant threat of danger, heightens the suspense and terror of the film.
