Stree is a 2018 Indian horror comedy film directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Dinesh Vijan and Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. under the banner of Maddock Films in association with D2RFilms. The film stars Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Flora Saini. The storyline of the movie is set in a small town named Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh. The town has a long-standing history of being haunted by a mysterious female spirit, referred to as Stree, who appears only during a four-day annual festival. The spirit is known to prey on the men of the town, abducting them and leaving only their clothes behind. The villagers have adopted a set of rituals and rules to protect themselves from the wrath of the spirit.
The male protagonist of the movie is Vicky (Rajkummar Rao), a tailor who falls for an urban woman (Shraddha Kapoor) who visits Chanderi during the festival. As the two start growing closer, Vicky learns more about the mystery of Stree and the danger she poses to the male population of the town. Together with his friends Bittu (Aparshakti Khurana) and Rudra (Abhishek Banerjee), Vicky embarks on a mission to stop Stree from terrorizing the town.
The film explores various themes, including gender relations, superstition, and the clash between modern and traditional values. It combines horror and comedy with a unique twist, making for an enjoyable and engaging movie-watching experience.
Rajkummar Rao delivers a standout performance, as he always does, portraying Vicky with an excellent mix of humor, vulnerability, and bravery. Shraddha Kapoor plays the mysterious woman with charm and grace, and the supporting cast, including Pankaj Tripathi as a local bookstore owner and Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee as Vicky's friends, add to the film's humor and excitement.
The film's direction by Amar Kaushik is sharp, and the script by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. is clever and witty, with dialogue that is both humorous and poignant. The cinematography by Amalendu Chaudhary is also excellent, capturing the beauty of Chanderi and the eeriness of Stree's presence.
Overall, Stree is a unique and refreshing addition to the Indian horror-comedy genre, blending humor, scares, and social commentary in a well-balanced and entertaining way. With a talented cast and crew, the film is a must-watch for anyone looking for something different and exciting.
