Split is a psychological thriller directed by M. Night Shyamalan and released in 2016. The movie revolves around the character of Kevin (played by James McAvoy), who has dissociative identity disorder. Kevin possesses 23 different personalities, one of which, called 'The Beast,' is set to take over and wreak havoc. The movie begins with the abduction of three teenage girls from a parking lot. The girls, Casey (played by Anya Taylor-Joy), Claire (played by Haley Lu Richardson), and Marcia (played by Jessica Sula), wake up in a locked room, confused and scared. As they try to figure a way out, they realize they are being held captive by a man with a split personality.

Kevin's psychiatrist Dr. Fletcher (played by Betty Buckley) is the only person who has any knowledge of Kevin's condition. Kevin's personalities visit her regularly and she tries to help him control them, but she is unaware of the current situation. Dr. Fletcher receives a series of emails from one of Kevin's identities, hinting at something ominous.

As time passes, the girls start to learn about Kevin's different personalities, which include the likes of a prim and proper woman, a hyperactive child, and a man with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Casey, one of the girls, has a troubled past and a history of abuse. She uses her own experiences to try and manipulate Kevin's personalities, hoping to get them to release her and her friends.

Meanwhile, Kevin's personalities continue to bicker for the control of the light - the dominant personality that controls Kevin's body. As the situation escalates, Kevin's personality called 'The Beast' gains more and more influence, and the girls' chances of survival start to diminish.

Split is a tense and creepy movie that delves deep into mental illness and how a single traumatic event can shape a person's sanity. The movie focuses heavily on the character of Kevin and his different personalities, which are portrayed brilliantly by James McAvoy. The way he can switch between different personas in a single scene is impressive and unsettling.

The movie also explores the different ways people cope with trauma and abuse. Casey's character is especially well developed, and her backstory is woven into the movie's narrative skillfully. The other girls are somewhat underdeveloped in comparison, and their characters are not as fleshed out.

One of the criticisms of Split is that it can be seen as exploiting mental illness for entertainment purposes. Kevin's condition is used as a plot device, and some have argued that the movie's portrayal of dissociative identity disorder is sensationalized.

Despite that, Split is an engaging thriller that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. M. Night Shyamalan's direction is tight, and the pacing of the movie is excellent. The climax of the movie is both shocking and satisfying, and it sets up the possibility of a sequel.

In conclusion, Split is a must-watch movie for fans of psychological thrillers. James McAvoy's performance alone is worth the price of admission, and the tension and dread that permeates the movie will keep you hooked until the end.

Split is a 2016 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 3.0.
