In Spinout, Elvis Presley stars as Mike McCoy, a talented race car driver who also happens to be the leader of a musical band. Along with his bandmates, Cynthia (Shelley Fabares) and Les (Deborah Walley), Mike travels the country performing at various events and car races. However, things get complicated when three different women fall in love with him and start vying for his attention.
The first woman is Diana St. Clair (Diane McBain), a wealthy and glamorous businesswoman who hires Mike to be the driver in a high-profile race. Although she initially takes an interest in Mike's driving skills, she soon becomes smitten with him and tries to get him to give up his music career to be with her.
The second woman is Cynthia Foxhugh (Shelley Fabares), Mike's bandmate and childhood friend who has been secretly in love with him for years. Despite her feelings for him, she acts as his best friend and tries to help him navigate his complicated love life.
The third woman is Susan (Susan Holloway), a young woman who works at a gas station and dreams of becoming a professional singer. Although she initially seems like just another fling for Mike, he starts to take an interest in her talent and helps her achieve her dreams.
As Mike tries to balance his love life and career, he also has to deal with a shady businessman named Howard Foxhugh (Carl Betz), Cynthia's uncle who wants to take over Mike's band and turn it into a more commercial act. With his bandmates by his side, Mike has to figure out a way to keep his music pure and avoid being exploited by Foxhugh.
As with most of Elvis Presley's movies, Spinout is a light-hearted and entertaining musical romp that showcases the King's charisma and singing abilities. Along with some catchy tunes, the film features plenty of fast cars and beautiful women, making it a fun and nostalgic ride for fans of the era.
Although the plot may seem formulaic and predictable, Spinout manages to stay engaging thanks to the chemistry between Elvis and his co-stars. Shelley Fabares, who had previously co-starred with Elvis in Girl Happy, is charming and endearing as Cynthia, while Diane McBain brings a touch of sophistication to her role as Diana.
The film also features some memorable supporting characters, such as Les, the band's goofy drummer who provides some comic relief, and Howard Foxhugh, the villainous uncle who adds some tension to the story.
Overall, Spinout is a fun and entertaining movie that showcases Elvis Presley at his peak as both a musician and an actor. Despite its flaws, it's a nostalgic trip down memory lane that will delight fans of the King and lovers of classic rock 'n' roll cinema.
Spinout is a 1966 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.8.
