Species: The Awakening is a sci-fi thriller movie released in 2007, directed by Nick Lyon, and produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The movie focuses on the character of Miranda Hollander (Helena Mattsson), a beautiful and intelligent scientist who realizes she is not all human. The movie also features Edy Arellano, Marco Bacuzzi, Jan Bouda, and Ben Cross portraying supporting roles.
The plot revolves around Miranda Hollander, who becomes the victim of a failed experiment conducted by her father, Tom Hollander (Ben Cross). Tom, a geneticist, creates a new human-alien hybrid species, combining human DNA with alien DNA, around the time when the original species of aliens is almost extinct. However, the experiment results in a girl-child which not only possesses physical strength greater than any human being but is also capable of mutating into different creatures when she is threatened. The girl-child soon grows into an adult and is named Miranda by her creator.
Tom realizes the potential danger posed by Miranda, and after several unsuccessful attempts to destroy her, he finally manages to imprison Miranda's beast form in a laboratory beneath his mansion. A few years later, Miranda's DNA is sold to multiple research institutes, and a group of scientists in Mexico becomes interested in studying her DNA.
The plot then shifts its focus to Azura (Edy Arellano), a neuroscientist in Mexico, who receives a sample of Miranda's DNA and clones her in her lab. She then implants the clone, called Bianca (also played by Helena Mattsson), with false memories and believes that she is a human. However, when Bianca starts to realize her true identity, Miranda's dormant alien genes awaken in her, and she begins to undergo transformations.
Meanwhile, Tom's mansion is now inhabited by his nephew, Forbes McGuire (Marco Bacuzzi), who is introduced as a caretaker character. Forbes stumbles upon the lab beneath the mansion and frees Miranda's beast form. The wild and dangerous Miranda then escapes and heads to Mexico in search of her clone.
As the plot progresses, Miranda and her clones become the objects of experiments and are hunted by many until the final confrontation in Azura's laboratory. The clones, realizing their true purpose, fight back against their creators, including Azura, and attempt to stop them from creating another hybrid species.
Overall, Species: The Awakening is an engaging sci-fi thriller that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats with its unpredictable plot, packed with action scenes and suspenseful moments. The supporting cast is commendable and complements the story well. Though it is the fourth installment of the Species series, the movie can be watched as a standalone movie as it does not rely on the previous storylines.
