Cristina is applying to college and as her college essay she writes about her childhood. Flor is the Mexican housekeeper hired by John and Deborah Clasky. John and Deborah have two children and Deborah's mother is living with them. John is a chef at a popular restaurant while Deborah is a stay at home mom. Deborah's mother Evelyn use to be a jazz singer.

The whole family is very likeable and very pleasant to be around except Deborah. She's strict and very uptight and so Flor never mentions that she has a daughter, Cristina. When summer arrives Flor needs a neighbor to translate for her because she can not speak English and she is told she will be needed 24/7. She explains that she can not do the others because of her daughter and so her daughter is invited to stay with them.

Cristina interprets for her mother and at the same time is able to impress John's wife. She ends up taking a liking to Cristina and begins to treat her like her own. She sends her to private school and even takes her out shopping making her own daughter Bernice jealous.

Cristina's mother starts to get upset with the idea that her daughter is losing her Mexican roots since Deborah has started to overstep boundaries. She also worries that she is losing her working class values. Flor has had enough when she finds out that John gives Cristina $600 for a minor task and threatens to leave. John begs her to stay for Cristina's sake.

John finds out that his wife had an affair and he takes Flor out for a ride. He takes her to where he works and cooks for her. They engage in a loving conversation where they start to have feelings for each other. Flor packs her things and takes Cristina home. She tells her that she can not go to private school anymore which upsets Cristina to the point that she starts screaming and making a scene. At the end of the movie they make up and Cristina enjoys knowing that she is indeed her mother's daughter.
