In the year of 3046, earth's resources have been depleted, and humanity has escaped to the far reaches of space to survive. However, with the vast expanse of the universe comes danger in the form of space pirates who prey on the weak and defenseless. This is where the movie Space Mutiny starts off, with a group of pirates attempting to hijack a spaceship called the Southern Sun. The ship is operational, but its resident captain and commander, Alex Jansen (played by John Phillip Law), is skeptical of its safety due to the negligence of the ship's designer, Elijah Kalgan (played by Cameron Mitchell).
Alex's skepticism is well-founded, as during the pirate attack, the ship's weapons fail to fire due to a malfunction. The situation becomes critical when the pirates storm the ship and take control of it. They kill some of the crew and take others hostage. However, not all is lost as several crew members band together to fight off the pirates and retake the ship.
One such member is the ship's muscular leading man, Dave Ryder (played by Reb Brown), who is undoubtedly the movie's most entertaining character. Dave is a man of action and uses his brawn to great effect, taking out many henchmen with his bare hands. His relationship with the ship's female lead, Lea Jansen (played by Cisse Cameron), provides some romance to the movie, but they always keep their eye on taking the ship back.
The movie's plot, while clever, is somewhat clunky and has some continuity errors, which may confuse some viewers. Additionally, the movie's characters, while quirky and interesting, are not given enough depth, which leaves them feeling somewhat one-dimensional.
However, one of the movie's highlights is its use of futuristic aesthetics; the sets and costumes are all creative and memorable. The movie also has a great soundtrack, which complements the action and adds an extra layer of immersion.
All in all, Space Mutiny is an enjoyable and underrated sci-fi action movie. While not perfect, it more than makes up for its flaws with memorable characters, fun action scenes, and great visuals. If you're a fan of cheesy '80s sci-fi movies, then Space Mutiny is a must-see.
Space Mutiny is a 1988 romance movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 33 minutes. It has received poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 2.1.
