Sounds of Sand is a powerful and emotionally charged drama directed by Marion Hänsel. Set in the arid desert landscape of Burkina Faso, Africa, it follows the story of Rahne, a nomadic herdsman, and his wife Mouna, who struggle to survive in an unforgiving environment filled with poverty, hunger, and drought. The movie begins with Rahne returning home to his village on the edge of the desert, where he meets Mouna for the first time. Later on, they marry and settle down to a life of farming and raising cattle, but when a drought hits the region, their lives become much more difficult. The drought destroys their crops, leading to famine and starvation, and their cattle start dying off one by one. Forced to leave their home, the couple and their family set out on a treacherous journey to find a new place to live.
As they travel through the desert, they face many obstacles and challenges, including bandits and hostile tribes who covet their possessions. They also encounter a group of refugees who have been displaced by war, and Rahne and Mouna must decide whether to help them or continue on their own journey.
Amidst all this hardship and tragedy, the couple's relationship is tested to the limit. Mouna becomes pregnant, and they worry about the challenges of raising a child in such an unstable environment. At times they lose hope and feel overwhelmed by the difficulties facing them, but they persevere and find joy in the small moments of kindness and compassion they encounter along the way.
Sounds of Sand is a beautifully shot film that captures the harsh and unforgiving nature of the desert landscape, as well as the courage and resilience of its inhabitants. The director uses long, static shots to convey the vastness of the landscape and the sense of isolation and loneliness that comes with living in such a remote and inhospitable place.
The performances of the cast are outstanding, particularly that of Issaka Sawadogo as Rahne, who portrays his character's stoicism and quiet determination with great authenticity. Asma Nouman Aden also delivers a strong performance as Mouna, conveying both her vulnerability and her inner strength as she struggles to survive in a world that often seems to be against her.
Overall, Sounds of Sand is a moving and thought-provoking film that poses important questions about the impact of poverty and climate change on the lives of people in developing countries. It offers a compassionate portrait of a couple who must overcome enormous challenges to survive and build a better future for themselves and their family.
