Son of Batman is a 2014 animated film based on the Batman and Robin comic book series storyline, "Batman and Son" by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert. The film tells the story of Batman discovering he has a son, Damian Wayne, who has been trained by the League of Assassins to become a deadly assassin. Batman takes custody of Damian and trains him to become a crimefighter in his own right, while also battling against his League of Assassins-trained enemies, including Deathstroke and Ra's al Ghul.
The movie takes its cues from the comic book source material, but also diverges significantly in places to create a more streamlined narrative for the screen. The film opens with Ra's al Ghul's daughter Talia breaking into Wayne Manor and informing Batman that he has a son whom he has never met. Damian's existence is news to Batman, but he soon discovers that the boy is a highly trained killer who is supposed to take over the League of Assassins from his grandfather, Ra's.
Batman is initially reluctant to take Damian under his wing, but when Talia is apparently killed by Deathstroke, Batman decides to take custody of the boy and train him to be a superhero. Damian, for his part, resists his father's authority and seeks to prove himself as a worthy warrior in his own right, leading to a number of tense conflicts between father and son. Along the way, Batman and Damian battle Deathstroke and Ra's al Ghul, with the latter seeking to use Damian as a weapon against Batman.
The film is notable for its intense action sequences, which feature a mixture of hand-to-hand combat and high-tech gadgetry. Batman's bat-plane and bat-cycle both make appearances, as does his classic grappling hook. Damien, meanwhile, utilizes a combination of swordplay and ninja skills, making for some impressive fight scenes. The film is visually stunning, with a dark color palette that underscores the serious tone of the story.
The voice acting is top-notch, with Jason O'Mara providing a powerful, brooding voice for Batman. Stuart Allan is also excellent as the cocky, rebellious Damian, while Morena Baccarin brings a sensuous quality to Talia. Thomas Gibson, meanwhile, is appropriately menacing as Deathstroke, a mercenary who is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.
At its core, Son of Batman is a story about the relationship between fathers and sons, with Batman struggling to come to terms with his newfound role as a parent. He is forced to confront his own limitations as a father, while also trying to instill a sense of discipline and purpose in his wayward son. At the same time, Damian must confront his own demons and decide whether he wants to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, or forge his own path as a superhero.
Overall, Son of Batman is an intense, action-packed film that will appeal to fans of the Batman franchise. It offers a fresh take on the character, while also paying homage to the classic comic book stories that inspired it. The film's themes of family, loyalty, and sacrifice give it a depth and resonance that will linger long after the credits roll.
Son of Batman is a 2014 animated movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 14 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.7.
