Somewhere in the City is a 1998 film directed by Ramin Niami. The movie boasts a star-studded cast featuring the likes of comedian and actress Sandra Bernhard, Italian actress and model Ornella Muti, and the renowned Robert John Burke among others. The movie explores the lives of an eclectic group of people living in various neighborhoods of New York City. The film begins with a series of vignettes that give the viewer a glimpse into the lives of these individuals. Through these glimpses, it becomes evident that each character is dealing with their own unique struggles and challenges.
The first character we meet is Everett (Burke), a former firefighter struggling with alcohol addiction. He is struggling to find meaning in his life after losing his job and his girlfriend. We also meet Aurora (Muti), a beautiful Italian woman who has recently arrived in New York City. Aurora is disillusioned with the city and the men in it after being in a series of abusive relationships.
We also meet Marty (Peter Stormare), a neurotic man who is convinced that he has cancer. The pediatrician Dr. Paul (Michael Imperioli) is Marty's doctor and is struggling to balance his career with his marriage to his wife, Suzy (Marianne Jean-Baptiste).
Rounding out the various characters is a transvestite named Ginger (Bernhard), who lives in a run-down apartment in the Bowery. Ginger makes a living as a performer and dreams of being a star.
As the movie progresses, the lives of these characters intersect, and their stories become intertwined. Everett meets Ginger and they develop an unexpected relationship. Aurora meets and falls in love with the charming Nino (Vincent Pastore), a man who sells fruit on the street corner. Marty meets Suzy's sister, Maria (Rosie Perez), and they begin a relationship. Dr. Paul discovers that his wife is cheating on him with another doctor.
Throughout the movie, there are many poignant and funny scenes. One of the most memorable scenes involves Aurora and Ginger having a heart-to-heart conversation on the rooftop of Ginger's building. Aurora is still struggling with her feelings of disillusionment, and Ginger tells her that she needs to "find her passion" in life.
Another memorable scene involves Everett and Ginger singing a duet at a nightclub. Their performance is interrupted by a drunken heckler, but Everett stands up to him and defends Ginger's honor.
The film's soundtrack features a mix of songs from well-known artists like Lou Reed and Moby as well as lesser-known indie artists like The Supreme Beings of Leisure and Esthero.
Overall, Somewhere in the City is a well-written and well-acted movie that portrays the lives of a diverse group of New Yorkers. The film's themes of love, loss, and finding one's passion are universal and relatable, and the movie is sure to resonate with audiences even more than two decades after its release.
