Something Something... Unakkum Enakkum is a 2006 Indian romantic drama film, directed by M. Raja and starring Jayam Ravi and Trisha Krishnan. The film was a remake of the Telugu film, Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, which was directed by Prabhu Deva. The film also stars Prabhu, Bhagyaraj, and Geetha in significant roles. The movie begins with a wealthy farmer, Sivasamy (Prabhu), and his wife (Geetha) giving birth to their first child, a baby boy, Kumaran (Jayam Ravi). Being the only son, Kumaran is pampered and spoiled by his parents. In contrast, Lakshmi (Trisha Krishnan) grows up in a poor and rural village with her nine siblings. Despite the financial burden, Lakshmi's father (Bhagyaraj) provides education to all his children so that they can have a bright future.
One day, Kumaran, along with his friends, visits Kapurthala in Punjab, where he meets Lakshmi, and they fall in love. Kumaran tries to impress Lakshmi's father to marry her, but due to Kumaran's wealth, he is seen as a materialistic person, a concept that Lakshmi's father detests, and he refuses to get her daughter married to Kumaran. However, Kumaran doesn't lose hope and decides to impress Lakshmi's father with his humility and sincerity towards his love.
In the process of winning Lakshmi's father's heart, Kumaran stays with Lakshmi's family for a while and helps them with their daily chores. He learns about their struggles and how they have lived their lives with limited resources but with great love and respect for each other.
The story takes an unexpected turn when Kumaran's father dies, and Kumaran is asked to return to his hometown and manage the family business. Kumaran promises Lakshmi that he will return to the village soon and marry her. However, Kumaran's mother, who is against Kumaran's marriage with Lakshmi, creates a misunderstanding between the couple, causing Kumaran to lose contact with Lakshmi.
Several years pass, and Lakshmi gets married to another man, believing that Kumaran has forgotten her. But fate brings them face to face again when Lakshmi's husband applies for a job in Kumaran's company. The rest of the story revolves around how Kumaran and Lakshmi deal with their feelings for each other and come to terms with their past.
The film has an emotional storyline about social classes and emphasizes the importance of valuing people for who they are, irrespective of their financial status. The chemistry between Jayam Ravi and Trisha Krishnan is impressive, and their performances are noteworthy. The supporting cast has also done a commendable job in their respective roles.
The film's music, composed by Devi Sri Prasad, was a massive hit, and songs like "Kutty Kasim" and "Kiliye Kiliye" were chartbusters. The cinematography by Raja's frequent collaborator, R.D. Rajasekhar, is also worth a mention, as he has beautifully captured the scenic locations of Punjab and the rural beauty of the village in which Lakshmi lives.
In conclusion, Something Something... Unakkum Enakkum is a feel-good romantic drama that will touch the hearts of the audience, and those who have seen the Telugu original may find this version equally enjoyable. The film is undoubtedly a must-watch for anyone who loves romantic dramas.
