In the year 2036, society has become highly militarized and children are raised to become soldiers from a young age. Sergeant Todd, played by Kurt Russell, is one such soldier who is considered to be one of the best. However, when a new generation of genetically-engineered soldiers is introduced, Todd is deemed obsolete and left for dead on a remote planet.

Left to fend for himself, Todd is forced to confront his own identity and purpose as a soldier. He encounters a group of settlers on the planet and forms a bond with their leader, played by Jason Scott Lee. Despite his initial reluctance, Todd becomes a protector for the settlers and eventually faces off against his genetically-enhanced replacements.
