Maria was raised in the country by her parents, but there were things about her father that she could not stand. For instance, her father was set in his authoritarian ways, and when she was old enough, she moved to the city in order to escape it. After becoming pregnant, Maria's boyfriend abandons her and she wonders how she will be able to make it on her own until her mother comes to visit while her father is in the hospital.
