Soft Matter is a 2018 independent comedy horror film directed by Jim Hickcox. The movie stars Ruby Lee Dove II, Hal Schneider, and Mary Anzalone in lead roles. The story of Soft Matter revolves around two scientists who are trying to create a viable substitute for human tissue. They use an unknown substance found in the ocean to create a new form of living matter. The two scientists, who are also romantically involved, unsuccessfully try to sell their creation to a large corporation. In an attempt to destroy the new living matter and the evidence of their actions, they dispose of it in the ocean. However, during their disposal, they meet two janitors who have broken in for an illegal rave. While the scientists try to hide their creation from the two janitors, their actions bring the creation to life, which leads to a bizarre set of events.

The movie begins on a mysterious note, with the team of scientists trying to create a viable substitute for human tissue. The two scientists, Kish (Ruby Lee Dove II) and Simon (Hal Schneider), are portrayed as eccentric and mad scientists. They use an unknown substance found in the ocean to create a new form of living matter. The substance is known as “soft matter” as it absorbs everything that comes into contact with it, including living creatures.

The plot becomes interesting when Kish and Simon try to sell their creation to a large corporation, but their efforts are in vain. In an attempt to destroy the new living matter and the evidence of their actions, they dispose of it in the ocean. While trying to dump their creation, they meet two janitors, Darryl (David Dillard) and Blake (Sam Stinson), who have broken in for an illegal rave. The two janitors accidentally open the container and the contents spill onto them, bringing the soft matter to life.

From this point onwards, the movie takes a comedic turn. The janitors start to experience bizarre and comedic transformations as the soft matter engulfs them. They start to change shape and develop unusual powers. One develops the ability to teleport, while the other can produce a sticky gooey substance. What follows are a series of humorous events as the janitors interact with Kish and Simon.

As the scientists try to hide their creation from the janitors, they visit their laboratory and discover a hidden room with elements of a ritualistic sacrifice. The janitors uncover more evidence, which suggests that Kish and Simon were involved in a dark experiment to create the perfect living tissue. The living matter itself appears to have a form of consciousness and has the ability to manipulate matter in the world around them.

The production design of the film is well done. The living matter is portrayed artistically using creature design and visual effects. The movie uses a mix of slow-motion, fast cutting, and humorous dialogue to keep the viewer entertained. The soundtrack is memorable and works well in establishing a wacky and eerie atmosphere.

The acting of the film is decent. Ruby Lee Dove II delivers a strong performance as Kish, while Hal Schneider plays an eccentric scientist named Simon. Mary Anzalone delivers a commendable performance as a mysterious character named Pollux. The janitors, played by David Dillard and Sam Stinson respectively, steal the show with their comedic timing and wit.

Overall, Soft Matter is a strange and unusual movie that is both comedic and horrific. It offers a refreshing take on the genre and does not take itself too seriously. The film’s end is satisfying, and it wraps up the events nicely. Soft Matter is an excellent example of independent filmmaking and should be watched by lovers of horror and comedy alike.
