This documentary traces the struggle undertaken by Avielah Barclay, who was determined to successfully complete the studies necessary to become the first traditionally trained female transcriber of Jewish Hebrew texts in the world. Although becoming a sofer is traditionally reserved for men, this film examines how an increasing number of Jewish women are intent on assuming roles that have been traditionally occupied by males. It explores the place that the Torah has in Jewish life, as well as the training and talent required to execute a perfectly scribed Torah scroll.
