Sodom and Gomorrah is a Biblical epic movie released in 1962. Directed by Robert Aldrich, the film tells the story of the destruction of the two ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah as recorded in the Old Testament. The movie stars Stewart Granger, Italian actress Pier Angeli, and Stanley Baker. The film begins with Lot (Granger), a wealthy trader, and his family arriving in Sodom, a luxurious and corrupted city filled with excess, and extravagance. Sodom is ruled by two brothers, Bera and Birsha, who control the city's citizens with force and brutality. Despite being warned by his brother-in-law, Abraham, that the city's immoral behavior is under divine judgment, Lot is drawn to the power and wealth of Sodom, and refuses to leave.
Lot soon becomes involved in a power struggle between the two rulers of Sodom, who are fighting for control of the city. He also falls in love with the princess of Sodom, Ildith (Angeli), who is already promised to another man. However, Lot's love for Ildith is interrupted by a war between Sodom and their neighboring city Gomorrah.
The war is waged mainly for control of salt mines, which are considered valuable resources. Gomorrah has managed to secure the mines, which leads to the kings of the surrounding cities coming to try to reclaim them. This leads to a massive battle between the armies of the different cities, which greatly devastates the region. However, through cunning and strategy, Lot and the two kings of Sodom eventually succeed to get control of the mines.
As time passes, the life of Sodom becomes even more sinful and hedonistic, leading to the destruction of the city of Sodom by divine intervention. Lot and his family are rescued by angels who warn them not to look back as they flee the city, but Lot's wife, unable to resist temptation, turns around and turns into a pillar of salt. After finally escaping the tumultuous events of Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot realizes the errors of his ways and returns to a life of righteousness alongside his daughters.
The movie received mixed reviews upon release, with some critics praising its grandeur and depiction of the biblical story, while others feeling that it lacked authenticity and historical accuracy. Nevertheless, the movie was a financial success, with its impressive sets and battle sequences, playing a large part in contributing to its success.
In conclusion, Sodom and Gomorrah is an epic movie that successfully tells the tale of one of the most well-known biblical stories. The movie features stunning set pieces and impressive performances from leading actors, as well as a harrowing portrayal of the wickedness and corruption of the local people. While not without its detractors, the movie remains a classic of the biblical epic genre, with its themes of morality and redemption holding universal appeal to audiences.
