In the film Small Crimes, directed by E.L. Katz, we follow the story of Joe Denton, a former cop who has just been released from prison after serving time for attempted murder. Joe was a corrupt cop, and his downfall started when he got involved with a notorious criminal named Manny Vassey. Manny set Joe up, and he ended up taking the fall for a crime he didn't commit. Now that he's out of prison, it's clear that Joe has no intention of turning his life around. He's a drunk, a drug addict, and a liar, and he's just looking for a way to get back into Manny's good graces.
As soon as Joe gets out of prison, he goes to visit his parents (played by Robert Forster and Jacki Weaver) who are less than thrilled to see him. They make it clear that they want nothing to do with him, and they are fed up with his constant lies and manipulation. Joe's father is a retired cop, and he knows his son is bad news. He warns Joe that he's playing a dangerous game, but Joe doesn't listen. He's too focused on getting back in Manny's good graces.
Joe's plan is to frame a local drug dealer named Junior for a crime he didn't commit. He hopes that this will get Manny's attention, and he can prove his loyalty once again. Joe recruits a local prostitute named Sandy to help him with his plan, and the two of them start to work together. Joe knows that Junior is innocent, but he doesn't care. All he cares about is getting back in with Manny.
As Joe starts to execute his plan, things quickly start to unravel. He realizes that Manny has no intention of taking him back, and that he's just using him for his own purposes. Joe also begins to face some serious consequences for his actions. He gets into a brutal fight, loses his job, and faces the wrath of the local police department. But despite all of this, Joe refuses to give up. He's determined to prove himself to Manny, no matter the cost.
The film is packed full of tension, mystery, and suspense. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau gives a great performance as Joe Denton, perfectly portraying the character's desperation, anger, and vulnerability. Robert Forster and Jacki Weaver are also excellent as Joe's parents, adding a much-needed dose of heart and humanity to the story.
Overall, Small Crimes is a dark and gritty crime thriller that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. The film is well-written, well-directed, and well-acted, and it's definitely worth a watch for anyone who loves a good crime drama.
